ArchAtlas Atlas & Gazetteer

Introduction
The ArchAtlas Gazetteer is a complilation of geographical indices of archaeological sites from a number of published and unpublished archaeological gazetteers (in cooperation with the various authors). Our growing collection of gazetteers is listed under Sources with links to more detailed source metadata. Site lists from some of the gazetteers have been incorporated into our Virtual Globes as indicated by the icon
in the source list and in the ArchAtlas Open Atlas. Spatial and temoral data have been re-configured to ArchAtlas standards (see Co-ordinate Systems, Reliability Rating and Chronologies). Many of the ArchAtlas gazetteers are linked to our Search Sites as indicated by the icon
in the source list. A growing list of Sites From Satellites, Panoramas and VRMLs can be found in Visualizing Sites. More details on specific sites, however, must be made to the original source publication or on-line database.

Future Developments
Currently, we are concentrating on prehistoric and early historic sites of Eurasia. In future we hope to expand to include more geographic locations and temporal periods. We plan to:
- Incorporate more source gazetteers into ArchAtlas Virtual Globes,
- Include more Sites From Satellites, Panoramas and VRMLs under Visualizing Sites, and in the ArchAtlas sites database (Open Archaeological Atlas),
- Implement a standardised temporal scheme across the gazetteers, and
- Develop a chronological search on the web-site.
We would like to hear from people who are willing to help us add to the web-site by hosting or publishing on ArchAtlas, their results, links and experimental projects, which are relevant to the field of archaeology. Please contact us at archatlas@sheffield.ac.uk.
